Job Summary:
This position is responsible for creating an environment which enables each
student to pursue their education as smoothly and completely as possible in the absence of theirregular teacher. A Building Substitute Teacher provides instruction, encourages a student’sprogress and manages the learning environment.

Education
- Appropriate degree(s) earned from an accredited college or university
Certification
- Substitute Authorization, License, or other qualifiying license with the Iowa BOEE

Job Duties:
- Implements existing lesson plans in a manner that ensures the integrity of academic time and motivates students to learn and participate.
- Instructs students regarding a variety of classroom topics and courses of instruction.
- Follows lesson plans as required by the assigned school.
- Assigns reasonable tasks and homework to students in accordance with the lesson plans.
- Addresses the various learning styles of the students accordingly.
- Facilitates the personal, social and intellectual development of students.
- Establishes a positive learning environment and responds to the individual needs of students.
- Ensures that all activities conform to district and building rules and regulations.
- Demonstrates professional practices in teaching.
- Effectively assesses student performance and provides students with effective feedback.
- Remains present in the classroom and interacts with students when class is in session.
- Assists with supervision of hallways, playgrounds and parking lots, as requested between
- classes and before/after school.
- Discusses any serious problems that may occur while on duty with the building administrator.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the building administrator or designee.
- For long-term assignments, you may be required to:
- Develop appropriate lesson plans.
- Create, administer and grade tests/assignments.
- Participate in parent-teacher conferences.
- Attend school related functions.
- Maintains the safety of students or follows basic safety practices
- Manages the classroom.
- Creates a learning community that encourages positive social interaction, activeengagement and self-regulation for every student.
- Establishes, communicates, models and maintains standards of responsible student behavior.
- Develops and implements classroom procedures and routines that support high expectations for learning.
- Uses instructional time effectively to maximize student achievement.
- Maintains an environment conducive to learning for students of all abilities with sensitivity and responsibility to cultural diversity.
- Manages student behavior in accordance with administrative regulations and guidelines, school board policies and legal requirements.
