Job Title: Migrant Family Specialist/Liaison

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Classification: Administrative Support

Immediate Supervisor: ELL Coordinator

Salary: $25-$35/hour commensurate with experience and qualifications 

 

Job Summary:

Communicate with newly identified migrant students, out-of-school youth, or migrant families to identify and provide services, assistance, and community/educational resource information as they adjust to the American school, culture, and lifestyle. Assist with written and oral communications between migrant families and school staff specific to migratory families (examples would include but are not limited to scheduling additional instruction, migrant parent meetings, migrant family surveys, etc.)

 

Hiring Specifications

Education

  • HS Diploma (required) 
  • BA (preferred)

 

Experience

  • Experience working with multilingual and migratory populations (preferred)
  • Social work (preferred)
  • Classroom teaching experience (preferred)

 

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Clear and timely communication
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Knowledge of community resources

 

Technology Requirements

  • Basic computer skills (computer navigation, email, web browser, Employee Portal)
  • Intermediate computer skills (Google Suites, Word, Excel, search function, student information systems, basic Promethean)
  • Ability to reach all skill levels listed if not already acquired

Job Duties:

  1. Focus on academic and acculturation success by supporting:
  • communication - amplifying all school communication to parent & child;
  • collect migratory family/student survey data regarding academic needs
  • promote and monitor attendance for supplemental academic activities (after school, summer school)
  • develop supplemental activities that foster a sense of community and support academic success, based on students’ interests and needs, such as after-school instruction,  book or STEM clubs
  • develop and maintain collaboration with appropriate instructors and specialized providers
  • partner with counselors and monitor credit accrual; communicate with families
  • academic work completion - partner with students and teachers;
  • remedy barriers - instability (family or child), attendance, graduation, credit, etc.;
  • assist with post-secondary planning - partner with counselors, parents, and child (all juniors and seniors migrant students).
  • developing literacy skills (elementary) by providing 1:1 or small group mentoring
  • collecting and addressing attendance data in parent meetings
  • Serve as an advocate and cultural resource for the district and school staff as it relates to migratory family lifestyle and its impact on student academic performance
  • Serve as an advocate and cultural resource for migratory families to accommodate timely and effectively their integration needs into the school and community culture
  1. Facilitate  verbatim translation services for matters related to migrant student services
  2. Plan and direct efforts to involve students, families, and migrant community members in school initiatives
  3. Develop and maintain relationships with school administration and staff, parents, families, and migrant community members
  4. Represent the district at community meetings that serve migrant community members
  5. Serve as a resource to families about district policies and procedures
  6. Respond to phone calls, emails, letters, and other communications
  7. Maintain accurate migrant student records
  8. Assist with other duties as assigned
